Diario "Nine O'Clock": “Argentine Day”: toasting world-famous wine and meat

by NINE O'CLOCK October 23, 2019

One of an embassy´s main duties is to promote its country´s flagship products overseas. For Argentina, this is not a difficult task, as its famous wine and meat do a great job of selling themselves.

On October 24, the Embassy of the Argentine Republic in Bucharest is hosting, with the support of Gustavo Navarro, managing director of CHR, “Argentine Day”, a promotional event designed to bring the delights of the country´s flagship meat and wine to a larger audience.

On this occasion, the Commercial Section of the Embassy of Argentina invites representatives of the HoReCa community to sample a selection of the country´s best loved products.

As one of the world’s largest producers of food, Argentinean cuisine has also gifted the world some of its most iconic dishes, notably its celebrated red meat. And nothing complements this meat better than a glass or two of Argentina´s celebrated Malbec wine.

The idea of Argentina is inseparable from its beef. The generosity of the soil and the temperate climate have combined to create the ideal conditions for high quality cows. Supporting this are the huge open plains of the Pampas. They are so vast, that it was once said that you could find “one cow per hectare”.

Unlike the more common grain-fed beef, Argentinean cattle are grass fed and graze freely in the field.  As a result, Argentine beef not only tastes superior, but is also leaner and more tender.

For many Argentinians, the quintessential flavor of their homeland is “Asado”, the traditional local barbecue, a range of meats cooked on an open fire or grill.

Although “Asado meat boasts such a distinctive and refined taste that it can be enjoyed simply with salt and pepper, it is sometimes served with chimichurri sauce, a blend of parsley and garlic that can enliven foods from bread to roasted vegetables and potatoes, as well as meat.

Argentinian beef has earned a reputation for being some of the world’s best, but to make the experience of enjoying it complete requires a red wine. Washing down a nicely grilled Argentine steak with a few glasses of a robust local variety like Malbec is the perfect pairing. It’s as if they were made for each other.

Malbec is by no means Argentina’s only fine wine – indeed, the market is so crowded that it is hard to narrow the selection down to just a few favourites. But meat lovers are urged to avail themselves of a Malbec, Argentina’s most famous export. Its bold, fruity, red-berry and blueberry flavor makes it the king of soft, reliable wines, and its affordable price makes it as easy on the wallet as it is on the palate.

The story of Malbec is an epic that begins in south-west France, and takes in vine plagues, medieval trade wars and a long struggle for recognition, before the wine finally gained global fame from a hot high-altitude vineyard in the Andes Mountains, in western Argentina.

Nowadays, Malbec is a household name, but the grape variety suffered from both anonymity and an identity crisis over the centuries. It has become widely known only since Argentina put it on the world wine map less than two decades ago.

Since 1995 Malbec has been the most widely planted grape in Argentina and exports have soared, as wine lovers around the world have come to enjoy this easy-to-drink red variety!

Numerous stories surround the evolution of these legendary Argentine products, creating a history that can be savored at steakhouses and barbecues all over the world. And savored is the appropriate word, as the consumption of their country’s flagship food and wine is always a good excuse for Argentineans to come together and enjoy the company of family and friends.

It is to be hoped that “Argentine Day” will help the convivial consumption of Argentina’s delicious wine and meat be taken up here too.
