Participation of the Argentine film director Pablo César in the Bucharest International Film Festival (BIFF) with the film "After the End."

Radio Romania Cultural publication, unofficial translation to English, on the participation of film director Pablo César at the Bucharest International Film Festival (BIFF) with the film "After the End":

"The film "After the End", directed by Pablo César, arrives in Romania as part of the 2025 Bucharest International Film Festival.

After the End, the most recent cinematic project by Argentine director Pablo César, will have its national premiere in Romania during the 2025 Bucharest International Film Festival (BIFF), in the Panorama section. The screening of this film represents a rare opportunity for the Romanian audience to engage with a work that subtly explores the connection between art, memory, and the end of life.

The film tells the story of Gloria, an 86-year-old Argentine artist who, on the verge of old age and illness, recalls the decades that marked her existence. Her narrative becomes a tender and lucid confession about love, trauma, loss, and the transformative power of art. Gloria is not just the protagonist of a film, but also a symbol of a generation that turned creation into a means of survival and resistance against the passage of time. At the same time, the film travels—through Gloria’s eyes—across some of the most tense and contradictory periods in Argentine history, shedding light on how society and culture were transformed under the pressure of historical circumstances.

Inspired by the life of Luza Fernández de Castillo—painter, writer, and curator with a deep impact on the Buenos Aires art scene—After the End is also a portrait of a woman who lived intensely in a century marked by rupture, repression, and cultural rebirth. Beyond its personal dimension, the film is a vibrant tribute to literature—especially to Jorge Luis Borges and Federico García Lorca—and to a way of understanding art as therapy, struggle, and liberation.

The project marks a new phase in the career of filmmaker Pablo César, internationally renowned for his unique approach that brings the cultural perspectives of Africa, India, and Latin America to the forefront. After the End is a film about collective memory filtered through the experience of a single woman, and at the same time, a meditation on death as a creative act.

With noteworthy appearances at festivals such as Mar del Plata, Granada, Kolkata, Biarritz, and the Instituto Cervantes in New Delhi, the film continues its festival journey with its selection at BIFF, consolidating its international status and attracting the attention of specialized critics.

The editing is by Liliana Nadal, acclaimed editor and member of the Argentine Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a frequent collaborator of Pablo César, whose contributions to Latin American cinema stand out for their sensitivity and narrative finesse.

After the End makes no easy promises, offers no consolation, but proposes a catharsis. It is an invitation to introspection—a cinematic poem about endings and creation, about women who do not fade away but burn until the end.

The screening of the film will be followed by a Q&A session with director Pablo César—who is also a jury member of the BIFF 2025 feature film competition—alongside lead actress Luza Fernández de Castillo and film editor Liliana Nadal. All three will be present in Bucharest, offering the audience an opportunity to delve into the behind-the-scenes of this remarkable production.

The 21st edition of BIFF will take place from September 19 to 28, 2025, bringing together a selection of international films in national premiere, within the only feature film competition held in Bucharest. The festival includes six sections: Feature Film Competition, Short Film Competition, Panorama, Romanian Authors, Retrospective, and History & Cinema.

Organized by the Charta Foundation and the Grigore Vasiliu Birlic Cultural Association, under the High Patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Radu of Romania, and with the support of the Ministry of Culture, BIFF 2025 continues its mission of presenting the Romanian public with the most relevant and courageous voices in world cinema.
