The Embassy of the Republic of Argentina in Romania and the Cervantes institute of Bucharest organize from February 18 to 23, 2019, at the Cervantes Institute (38 Regina Elisabeta Blvd.) a series of film screenings under the title „Cine Clásico Argentino”.

The selection gathers 7 movies considered to be part of the heritage of the Argentinian cinematography. These are titles that are included in the 100 movies of the Argentinian film industry of the last 40 years, 4 k digitally restored with the highest care in the “Gotika” laboratory in Buenos Aires, using the best performing methods. This was possible thanks to the program “PLAN RECUPERAR” whose objective – through the joint efforts of the Argentinian Secretariat for Culture and of the Association of the Argentinian Film Directors – is to recover and digitalize movies that are now considered classical.

The seven movies are signed by directors such Eliseo Subiela, Adrián Caetano, Bruno Stagnaro, Fernando Pino Solanas, Adolfo Aristarain, etc.

Entry is free within the limit of the available seats. The access in the room is based on a booking request sent to the e-mail address cultbuc@cervantes.es. The booking becomes valid only if the applicant has received a written confirmation of the available seats.

Monday, February 18, 2018, at 7:00 PM – “Un Oso Rojo”, directed by Adrian Caetano, Argentina, 2002, 95 minutes, original version in Spanish, Romanian subtitle, movie’s genre: drama

Synopsis: Although Oso is the only one who counts them, seven years have passed since he was jailed for murder and armed robbery. On the robbery day, there was his daughter Alicia’s one-year birthday, and his wife Natalia probably never forgave him. Now, when he is conditionally released, Oso hopes he can start it afresh, who knows? Like an urban western, Un Oso Rojo outlines the destiny of a marginal lawman in the real crusade of a suburb of Buenos Aires.

Tuesday, February 19, at 7.00 PM – “Pizza, Birra, Faso”, directed by Adrian Caetano and Bruno Stagnaro, Argentina, 1997, 92 minutes; original version in Spanish, English subtitle, action

Synopsis: Four friends. One city. One solution… Cordobés lives with three friends and his wife Sandra, who is pregnant. The four marginalized teenagers formed a gang that acts on the Buenos Aires streets. They survive by committing robberies, but they don’t act by themselves, but they always execute the orders of someone who keeps most of the prey. Cordobés’ and his friends’ life philosophy is that as long as they have beer, pizza and cigars, everything is bearable.

Wednesday, February 20, at 7.00 AM – “Sur”, directed by Fernando Pino Solanas, Argentina, 1987, 118 minutes, original version in Spanish, English subtitle, genre: drama

Synopsis: Argentina, 1983, the end of the military dictatorship. Floreal is finally released from jail. For five years, his wife waited for him to come back; but all this time, the couple and the country have changed. Yet, both of them ardently wish to find their hope and freedom again.

Thursday, February 21, at 7:00 PM – “Roma”, directed by Adolfo Aristarain, Argentina, 2004, 155 minutes, original version in Spanish, English subtitle, genre: drama

Synopsis: The movie tells the life story of an Argentinian writer, Joaquin Gonez, who now lives in Spain. At the age of 60, he wants to write his memoirs with the help of Manuel Cueto, his young assistant. Their discussion has the role to make Gonez travel back in time and rummage in his soul memories that were deeply buried for a long time ago. Thus, we find out that Joaquin Gonez is the son of two musicians, having a very close relationship with his mother, Roma, who he divinizes, and after his father’s death, both of them go through dramatic moments. Soon, Cuerto realizes that his job is more complicated than he initially thought because Gonez suffers a blockage and he has a total lack of inspiration. This means that his assistant will also have to do the work of the writer. The images from Gonez’s past, namely since his childhood in Buenos Aires to his arrival in Spain, are made with the help of flash-backs. It is a truly thrilling movie about life, death, feelings, political battles, love and disappointment.

Friday, February 22, at 7:00 PM – “El lado oscuro del corazón”, directed by Eliseo Subiela, Argentina, 1992, 127 minutes, original version in Spanish, English subtitle, genre: drama

Synopsis: In a cheerful and surrealist romantism, the poet Oliviero lives in Buenos Aires, where he recites poems at the traffic lights to make a living. Among his friends, there is an eccentric sculptor, Canadian, and Death. Yes, weird, but the poet has an at least bizarre relationship with Death itself, who is trying to convince him to come back down to earth, not to be childish anymore and seek for a job. Oliveiro is searching for the absolute love, but he doesn’t look for it where he should, so women who get to his bed are gone through a mysterious door in the morning. But things change when Oliveiro meets a prostitute with whom he falls in love, but she doesn’t want to be with him, so the roles are exchanging between them.

Saturday, February 23, at 5:00 PM – “Hombre mirando al Sudeste”, directed by Eliseo Subiela, Argentina, 1986, 105 minutes, original version in Spanish, English subtitle, genre: drama

Synopsis: Dr. Julio Denmis is a shrink and works in a neuropsychiatric hospital. One day, a young man called Rantés comes to his office, pretending to be a being from another planet. The doctor treats him as a paranoiac, but Rantés insinuates in her life making him doubt whether he is really crazy, and he makes him reconsider his life and profession in a subtle way.

Saturday, February 23, at 7:00 – “Juan Moreira”, directed by Leonardo Favio, Argentina, 1973, 102 minutes, original version in Spanish, English subtitle, genre: drama, historical

Synopsis: Based on a novel by Eduardo Gutiérrez, the movie tells the life and death of Gaucho Moreira, a character that has become one of the mythical figures of the Argentinian history, a lonely fighter for justice in the Argentinian Pampas during the period in which the nation was formed. His figure inspired many literary works, movies and songs.
